Blackjack is a card game played against the dealer. The goal is to have a hand value closer to 21 than the dealer's, without going over. Players compete against the dealer only, not other players at the table.
Upon placing your bets in the betting circle, you and other players are dealt two cards each, while the dealer takes a single card face up. If your first two cards add up to a total of 21, you have a Blackjack and win the hand. If not, you can choose to "stand" (stay with the cards you have) or "hit" (take another card). If you hit, you must tuck your original two cards under the chips in the betting circle.
If your starting two cards are a pair, like two threes or two eights, you can choose to split them into two starting hands. This requires an additional bet equal to the original amount, and each hand is played separately. You will receive an extra card for each of the split cards.
Double Down: Whenever your starting two cards make a total of 11, it is best to double down, as this wager will give you the strongest hand in most situations. It is also recommended that you double when the dealer shows 2-6 and stand when he shows 7 or ace. It is important to remember that splitting aces and 8s, hitting on 12-16 versus a dealer's 2-6, and double downing on 11 will greatly reduce your house edge.
